I don't disagree with any of that. Three points I'll make though:
1. Lots of BYU athletes get out of shape on their missions. I'm sure coaches told them all to stay in shape. Why hold him to a higher standard than them?

2. I didn't say anything about exercise. I was talking about diet. A healthy diet is much more important than exercise to weight control/weight loss than exercise. Some say it's 80% diet, 20% exercise. It can be expensive to try to eat right. What do you think he is eating and how is he paying for it?

3. I agree many missionaries may not give 100% but trying and failing is different from setting out in advance and saying, "screw D&C4, I'm going to give 75%* to the work and focus 25% on football."

*or some other ratio.
