I was just fine my Freshman year with no car and mooched of friends for rides when totally necessary. I was very glad I had a car (a very crappy one, but still a car) other years due to research jobs taking me miles away from campus frequently. So while it is doable...I would say having a cheap car after Freshman year is definitely worth the few thousand you would spend on it.
