Charlie Strong and other college coaches are realizing offering kids before their junior year is a major gamble. They also feel the pressure to be the 1st to offer a recruit, double edge sword.
When Strong took over Texas he stated he had a team of "entitled players;" players that matured/peaked early; players that were over/under coached; didn't learn a strong work ethic relying on short lived skill sets, etc. Basically kids he wouldn't have offered over other players in the same recruiting class and position. He and others are looking for hard workers that are still maturing in high school.
While at Texas, Charlie started to offer players in their junior season - unfortunately, he was not at Texas long enough for his recruiting blueprint to take shape.
He mentioned he was in favor of the NCAA preventing schools from offering scholarships until the recruit is in his/her junior year in high school.
Best of luck to your nephew!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Cougars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
