When I lived in Utah, we sat in our basement throughout the winter. In the LA
area, my family and I are extremely active throughout the entire year due to the incredible weather. I feel like I am not wasting a good chunk of my life like I did during the winter months in UT.

Consider moving to the Inland Empire if it will be close enough to work. Rancho Cucamonga is an incredible city and you can find lower priced, large houses with great schools (Etiwanda School District) if you move to N. Fontana.

Also think about living in So Cal as an investment for retirement such as a 401k. You will pay up for housing, but you will reap huge financial benefits when you sell your house in 20-30 years. If you decide to retire out of state, you will likely be able to pay cash for your house and still have money in the bank.
