In the world where social media makes it easy to connect thoughts through conversation, it seems like there is an opportunity here to raise the level of respect between the fan bases and schools and create common ground.

I'm just thinking about a simple article noting much of what has been noted in this thread, namely, yes, the mocking is juvenile, but it doesn't really hit the mark like the mockers intend, but we do appreciate the author pointing out one important fact that so many seem to miss on; that mocking Mormonism should be placed in the same category as mocking any other religion.

It would go a long ways for BYU's publication to commend their paper for attempting to raise the level of a few in their fan base that may reflect poorly on the school as a whole. Then tweet it out with a tag to the GU paper twitter account.
