he drove off. He stopped the car, went around and took the nozzle still connected to the hose out of his tank, threw it on the ground, and drove home.

We knew nothing about it until the cops showed up at our apartment door asking for said roommate. Apparently he used a credit card for gas and they tracked him down. He had to to pay for the damage and do community service to pay his debt to society. We had a good laugh over that one for many years to come.
