If the kid wants to play RB, and has looked good at RB, he should play RB.
Being successful as a D1 football player, and then in the NFL, requires you to like what you're doing enough to do it when no one is watching.

If by this time next year he hasn't been able to drop some weight and/or break through at RB, he can move to another position knowing its his decision and not the coaches.
