They're trying to woo Millenials
Millenials aren't as interested in live sports as much as prior generations so ESPN is trying (unsuccessfully) to tie in issues Millenials do care about. It's like a pizza and beer joint turning into a hipster sushi bar in order to attract a younger crowd, but then wondering why their old customers don't come around anymore.
