I started with my own homemade charcoal smoker but now use a pellet smoker
I made an UDS (ugly drum smoker) out of a used 50 gal barrel (my barrel was used to transport pineapple juice). I learned to smoke meat in that and somehow thought that the pellet smokers were not "real" smokers. I expected that my next smoker would be a stickburner.

But I realized that I rarely have hours and hours on a Saturday or Sunday where I can be around my smoker, watching the temperature and adding fuel at the right times. I just didn't have the time.

So I bought a RecTec a few years ago. I use it a lot more often than I used by UDS, because I can set the temperature and (gasp) leave it running while I run errands around town. The smoke flavor is fine for me and my family (my wife doesn't love really strong smoke taste) but some supplement with smoke tubes that burn additional pellets. Mine has a huge 40 lb. hopper that will carry you through any long-term cook.

If you want to be a purist and sit in your backyard for hours and hours, tending your fire box, then get a stickburner. They look awesome in the backyard or driveway, and I still really want one. But for me, my pellet cooker is much more practical and I get to use it a lot more (I even start ribs before church and then they are done not long after I get home).

I didn't look closely at the one you linked, but check the quality of the controller and make sure to get one that is large enough (cooking space) to do what you need it to do. I think you'll enjoy being a pellet-head.
