About a month ago my son got a large deep cut above his eye requiring stitches, since it was a Sunday evening the only option was to go to the ER.
The ER Physician spends about 5 minutes with out son putting in 4 stitches.
Fast forward to yesterday we find out that while the hospital ER we went to was in-network, the Dr. who stitched up my son was not. So after billing my insurance and receiving payment from their for their in-network rates with the hospital they are billing me separately for the additional 500 dollars the insurance didn't pay. They already paid him roughly 450 for the 5 minutes he spent stiching up my son.
I'm pissed at the hospital for having out of network physicians practicing at their facility, I'm pissed at the doctor because his charges seem kinda high, and I think he is doing it on purpose because he knows he can get away with it since he isn't contracted with my insurance, and I'm pissed at my insurance for not negotiating with the hospital and doctor from gouging me with additional charges.
Under my plan I'm only required to pay 10% after my deductible, which was met already before this little incident happened last month, so at the most I should only be on the hook for a 100 dollar payment to the doctor.
