It all comes down to winning. People wouldn't tolerate Bronco because he seemed to have hit a ceiling. If BYU had won more then probably most would've readily accepted Bronco and everything about him--weird or not. You mentioned that Kalani is in his honeymoon phase and in my opinion that's almost the only reason people are so accepting of everything he says and does. If his teams don't do well, then after a few years it won't matter how likable he is (and he's a very likable person), or that he's a Lavell player, or anything else. I believe fans will tolerate weirdness if there's winning, but won't tolerate losing regardless of how cool someone is.
