I think it is only for the infield....
which is kind of a trend even in the HS ranks. American Fork, Lone Peak, and Lehi all have partial turf infields now. The turf is mostly around the plate and the pitchers mound in a large circle around each although each are different. LP's mound is now all turf but American Forks mound is dirt. All 3 have turf around the plate and batters boxes. I prefer they keep the actual mounds dirt but I like the turf around it and also around the plate and batters boxes as those area's would get chewed up and hard to maintain pretty quickly once they start playing on them. With the turf that doesn't happen. I also prefer they keep the rest of the infield and all of the outfield natural grass.

We played in a league at SLCC when our boys were 14 and their field is all turf although there is also dirt around the bases and home plate. We loved the league but didn't like the turf in the outfield very much.
