Here is what gets me excited:
1. The number of 3 and 4 star players jumped last year. 2 star players do pan out. Cody Hoffman was a 2 star, but getting 3 and 4 star players means less player development is needed, and usually a higher ceiling for the players.
2. The players who were at signing day, actually made it to campus. This was a big problem in the past. He would get a 3 star recruit from TX or CA, and they'd never show up. Or transfer before they got here.
3. The lower ranked 2 star players have NFL measurables. I love to hear of a 2 star CB who runs a laser-timed 10.8 100m dash and is 6'1". This guy will probably develop over 4 years into an NFL cornerback. We'll also sign a 2 star tackle who is 6'5" and 270. You can see how that guy will contribute.
4. The staff is offering and being considered by 4 and 5 star non-mormon recruits. Many of these players aren't coming to BYU because they don't see the NFL pipeline. But with that changing, I can see recruiting getting much better with non-mormon players.
These are just my observations. You are right, the class ranking wasn't dramatically different from what we've seen in the past. But its getting better.
