Most kids who regularly get night terrors just get them.
We are 3/5 on kids with regular night terrors. I got them from age 2-5, my dad had them same age range.

Although it seems terrifying (hence the common name), it is mostly a benign parasomnia that kids outgrow, usually well before puberty.

The most important way to manage it is to keep the kid safe. They can wander. It won't help to try to awaken them. Night terrors occur during their deepest sleep phase, usually the first of the 3-4 phases of stage 4 sleep each night. So if we put the kid to bed at 7:30pm, the night terrror would usually occur about 9:30-10pm. One way to manage it is to rouse the child partially about an hour after they have fallen asleep, which disrupts this first sleep cycle and usually (in our experience) averts the episode.

One of our kids did it for 6 years, 2 others did it for 2-3 years. They are emotionally normal, all outgrew it and are fine as teens / adults.
