Yes, it was compared to their share of rent. And even now
I live in student housing in Texas. It is $700 per person. And it is individual contracts like BYU.

Just spoke with a friend who just wrote $105,000 worth of checks for tuition and

He should have at least used a credit card to get points on that
Skeptical Optimist

They usually charge a "service fee" to charge tuition on a credit card.

My grad school didn't. I guess I was just lucky.
Skeptical Optimist
7/24/17 8:18am
You were lucky. I wonder if they still do that.
chilango
7/24/17 8:23am
I paid tuition last week with a credit card in Texas. No service fee.

For what length of time? A semester? A year?
Pimpin4Paradise
7/24/17 7:42am
Only this semester (edited above)
Sandstone Cougar
7/24/17 7:46am
Sounds like they're going to private colleges or something. I understand why

Have to admit, it'd be fun to say you go to school in a place called Walla Walla
chilango

If you had three kids going to UMASS in state

The best part is that he has $105,000 in his account to write said checks.

How much tithing have you paid since your kids were born? BYU isn't actually all
chilango
7/24/17 8:00am
Tithing is more my country club dues than my tuition payments.
Sandstone Cougar
7/24/17 8:03am
It's really both, if you think about it. Unless your kids don't end up at BYU,
chilango
7/24/17 8:05am
The benefits are out of this world though. I am not complaining.
Sandstone Cougar

I'm guessing that BYU is a pretty small sliver of total church expenditures
Skeptical Optimist
7/24/17 8:36am
True but BYU is far more than a sliver.
soupie
7/24/17 9:16am
but not nearly as much as you would think...personally I think they need to
Nat Gas Man
7/24/17 9:24am
I have heard a number of times that the church’s single biggest expense is BYU
BYUinTX
7/24/17 9:19am
I'd pay tithing even if my kids went to a different school. It's not the same thing
YIsForBrigham
7/24/17 8:46am
I agree it isn't exactly the same thing. But the cost of having your kid
chilango
7/24/17 8:51am
Holy crap people have a lot of money
TNT
7/24/17 8:25am
Seriously. If this guy has that kind of money just lying around I certainly
jensen46
7/24/17 9:11am
TNT isn't that grateful for BYU

For $35k you'd think they'd throw in lunch.

My parents said I could go to any college I wanted and they'd help me

I have two at BYU and one at UVU right now
bluelands
7/24/17 9:17am
wait your kids can't live there if they go to BYU
Nat Gas Man
7/24/17 9:21am
True. That's well outside the 2 mile radius.
soupie
7/24/17 9:24am
Auto-corrected from UVU to BYU. Interesting...
bluelands
7/24/17 9:34am
That makes more sense.
soupie
7/24/17 9:48am
oh and you can expect rents to go up...still a shortage of places to live
Nat Gas Man
7/24/17 9:27am
Mainly b/c everyone wants the BYU social life even if not attending but

My daughter struggled to find married housing
bluelands
7/24/17 9:37am
my married kids have had to live in $700/month total dive basements in S Provo
Nat Gas Man
7/24/17 9:37am
Yep. We've seen that.

My HCBW and I were going through old financial records

Daughter's fiancé is 6'5". His brother's married apartment has such low ceilings, he can't stand up when he visits.
soupie
7/24/17 9:51am
You can definitely find stuff for less than $365. But I also thought
jensen46
7/24/17 9:38am
IIRC rents are higher around the U...in my neighborhood South of UVU basements
Nat Gas Man

Orem is cracking down on basement renting
bluelands
7/24/17 10:12am
actually Orem allows all houses to have rentals if they meet the criteria and
Nat Gas Man
7/24/17 10:47am
I believe Provo is trying to do this too. The big deal is with it being owner occupied
soupie
7/24/17 10:56am
But many times that's in totally different housing markets like Bay Area or Seattle.
soupie
7/24/17 9:54am
supply and demand...that is why Ashton Apts are $2400/month for 3bd 3 bath
Nat Gas Man
7/24/17 10:01am
For me the biggest problem is the 2 mile radius paired with the fact that they can't
soupie
7/24/17 10:06am
it really is pretty dumb and isn't even two miles in much of Provo, many areas
Nat Gas Man
7/24/17 7:13pm
Nah I'm talking Texas, Kansas, Wisconsin. When I tell people I work with
jensen46
7/24/17 11:02am
Do they realize it's an individual contract and 5 other people pay that too?
soupie
7/24/17 11:09am
Yes, it was compared to their share of rent. And even now
jensen46
7/24/17 11:20am
and that is exactly why people need to quit complaining. Rent, utilities, food,
