This case is different. This is all marketing.
OTC medications arent new. They are the same handful of ingredients with brand names slapped on to make them seem better.
My favorite is zzzquil. The active ingredient is diphenhydramine(benadryl). You can pay $5 for a box of pills or 98 cents for more of the cheap stuff.

Because they own it until their patent expires and basically other options aren't available until then.
