I'd say a lot of that comes from how much less economic security there is today
It's a lot easier to leave home when you can be relatively confident that with a degree of hard work you're pretty much assured of a decent job, home ownership and a pension. I suspect a lot of millennials would actually prefer to not be living in their parents' basement.
