I liked the fact that Brady was a teammate and he unpants the god...
Look if its more important to preserve the myths then you should become a member of a faith that venerates mythological figures and saints. If you want to rever the truth, then you accept when one of many of a player's former teammates comes out with the unflattering revelations about your mythical hero.

Did Luke Staley have an unbelievable 2001 season? Yes!

Did the fact that Brandon Doman and others carried the DE read option inside the B-C gaps make the 8 yards per carry mark a lot less difficult to achieve? Yes!

Did the same help Taysom and Jamaal? NO! Because 4/5th of Jamaal's career was spent inside the A or B gaps?

To those of us who know the game, the guy that blocks when necessary, doesn't fumble, powers through the A-C gaps in tough spots and does NOT commit turnovers, is the go-to guy. You want to get him the rock.

Consumate example of Staley. Hate on me but understand the game. His last play against Miss St.

When facing a 3rd Down and 2-yds inside the Miss St 5, the defense was set up to stop the run first, since a FG would win the game for BYU, but leave Miss St a slight chance to tie it or even win it afterwords. But the way to best that defense was simple. Run that pitch option formation. BYU did! However, The correct call was Doman to read and carry into the A, B, or C gap right while Staley took the seal route against the charging OLB or DE. Make that block and Doman gets the 1st down or maybe even scores.

But Staley essentially ignored the DE block option. By not doing so, he was essentually saying, "Give me the pitch" rather than block the inside DE. Doman could have gone behind a Staley block down on the DE/OLB to plow through the C gap and maybe even score. He certainly would have gotten the 1st down. Staley did not block down on the DE, but ran the right side stretch (pitch route). Doman had to pitch to the leading Staley or be TFL. MSU read it well, strung it to the 12th defender (sideline), and on the cut-turn tackled Staley for no gain AND broke his ankle. A FG still won the game but not from the best angle.

For Staley, it was a game, set, match and career ending play. Had he correctly shouldered left into the DE upon the snap, Doman would have kept the ball and run into the open C-Gap, gotten the 1st Down and possibly stretched the drive into a TD. Do NOT assume that a former defensive player and teammate does not recognize what that decision cost BYU.

Put it another way, if Staley's back up had been in, then the DE is blocked and Doman carries into the C gap and the exhausted D OTR might never have had to take the field again, or would have had a TD (not a FG) cushion in that last minute. Staley goes to Hawaii healthy. BYU likely has a different mental outlook vs. Hawaii. It probably wins, gets a BCS bowl.

Do not think you know what the D was thinking or why Brady and other DPlayers from that team are or have been mostly quiet but occasionally vocal critics of Luke. Luke was a good player, had an exceptional statistical year and won a great award. But let's not romanticize it either. His last I believe selfish play took away from a phenomenal TEAM season. I am with Brady for that reason.
