Yes, it's bold. I've been around BYU football for awhile. I think the real reason the Honor Code Office started in the first place is because of Jim MacMahon. I'm not saying that as a put down on Jim, because I loved watching him play and enjoy that he is supporting BYU again and got his degree, etc. He fits the mold of a "rebel without a cause". And I kind of laughed about things he did in the NFL. He was his own man.
However, because of some of the things he did, it ticked off the students. LaVell Edwards allowed his Assistant Coaches to coach and be responsible for the players under them. Because of that, some may have taken advantage of his good nature. Students were unhappy and complaining and word got around. After a bit, we got the HC Office. LaVell had been a Bishop and made determinations based upon what I will call the "spirit of the law", which I've always preferred. You could tailor things based on the situation.
The HC Office must, of necessity, rule based on the "letter of the law". Everyone has to be treated the same regardless. With Francis Bernard it appears to be a travesty. If FB is in good with EVERYONE else, but HC, then it is probably no longer serviing it's original purpose and should be closed.
