We can get the later season P5 games on the road easy enough (16 since independence and 6 so far from 2018 and on) and we've been able to get some SEC and ACC teams in Provo in October and November (Georgia Tech in '13, Mississippi St. in '16,  Missouri in '20, Virginia in '21 and '25). 

I love that we played Portland St. early this year. Could you imagine if the team was 0-3 right now? We need to schedule Hawaii every year so that we can take advantage of the scheduling exemptions and flexibility. Host Hawaii in late August in Provo every other year (using Hawaii's exemption and flexibility) and then have the FCS game or an easier opponent in Provo in the years when we play in Honolulu (using our exemption and flexibility).

I think 2020 is a great example of what we could strive for in independent scheduling, with a couple of additions:

Play Hawaii in Provo in late August. Then play Utah in SLC, then Michigan St. in Provo, then ASU and Minnesota on the road. Finish the initial stretch with Utah St. on the Friday night of General Conference weekend. Then, enjoy the BYE week.

After Bye week, play at Boise St. and NIU. Add an easy payday opponent in Provo and then host Missouri and San Diego St. at home in November and finish at Stanford over Thanksgiving weekend. That's 6 solid P5 opponents, with two in November! Plus regional rivalry type games against Boise St, Utah St., SDSU, and Hawaii spread throughout the season. NIU and the payday opponent fill out the schedule. Four regional road games in California, Arizona, Idaho, and Utah and also longer road games to Minnesota and Illinois. 

The 2021 schedule could be even more compelling:
