In 2010, TH said that independence was not a stepping stone awaiting a power conference invitation.

A few years later, after the landscape had been altered, he said that BYU could not keep up (financially) with the P5, indefinitely. The goal now was to gain access to a P5.

Recently he said that, referring to the Big 12 decision not to expand, he was surprised and greatly disappointed because he thought BYU was in.

It’s apparent now, IMO, that the power conferences will not bring in any new outsiders. Any movement, in the next decade, will involve P5s moving among the power conferences.

I can foresee a time when the administration decides that they want all BYU sports playing in one conference.

It all depends on the administration’s end game. And none of us knows what that is.
