Perhaps it would be better to know the context before comparing it to
what Boney does.
Big difference between "voted most likely to take his cousin to the prom"
and "You f'n suck, loser, you're a waste of a scholarship, etc, etc" - As a player you can laugh at opposing fans that spout crap like that, not as easy when it is your own. No place for it and yes some handle better than others, but then these same people expect the players to pose for 32 pictures, sign everything in their trunk and give them 100% of their time at a fanfest. Can't have it both ways and some fans need some perspective. As coaches we can take it, because it comes with the territory, don't go after your own players though.

if their guy just picked on us we'd be upset - if he picks on everyone, then we'd be really small to let it bother us
