Because JC guys are usually rough and not much help the first year at certain...
...positions, largely skill positions where they haven't had time in the system to learn the offense and build chemistry. Look at BYU's recent history with JC guys. There have been more busts than impact players with the majority just being depth fillers and not productive that first year. Getting an impact player from JC ranks to come to BYU is rare.

You'd be better off giving the scholly to a 4 yr player that gives you more time to develop him into a productive player
