You can’t be on the outside (BYU) and simply say we will throw all of the money we can in to it to compete at the highest level.
Money doesn’t solve: Conference affiliation (which has as much to do with recruiting as anything), bowl contracts, schedules, etc.
What it could solve is coaching - BYU, however, has had good coaches (LaVell and Bronco) with what they pay.
If Oklahoma State was hypothetically demoted to the Sun Belt, T. Boone Pickens couldn’t make them P5 equivalent or relevant with any size check.
Same with Oregon and Phil Knight. UT and their billionaires.
So, this idea that the BOT sit around and say, “we could give $X.XX and then we’d be P5” is a farce.
Solution: Join the MWC. Play realistic schedules, compete for championships, recruit in the 50’s (better than maybe one or two G5’s), shoot for the NY6 game - in other words, control what you can control.
If - HUGE IF - the time comes where we are INVITED to the P5 then the ceiling and expectations all get reset and we ride that wave.
Until then, BYU needs to be what they are. A better than most G5 who plays solid football. If you’ve thought BYU was EVER anything but that, you’re lying to yourself.
