Lavell and were up there at the top. But that was the 80’s and 90’s. Byu is a privately owned church college. The church knows there are TONS of things way more important than a game and no way is going to shell out massive money or makes whatever changes that would turn it into a solid top team every year. (Like getting a well qualified, non LDS coach-not that LDS coaches can’t be good but you have far less options to choose from)
I think the Lavell years disillusioned a lot of people. I wonder how well he would’ve even done in today’s version of college ball? He was a legendary coach for his time, the best ever in fact. I’d be honestly curious to see if it would be the same now.

I only got to see the last few years of Lavells career, which were good but nothing like the early success. I am used to and expect that the program is simply not one that will compete most years for a national title or be in the top 10 teams. I do expect to win a decent amount of games every year and going to a solid bowl game every once in a while. I think that’s just the reality of Byu.

I was happy with Bronco as the coach. We won 10 games a year on average, a few good quality wins against good teams and beating the crap out of teams we should be. We’re fooling ourselves if we think BYU’s ever going to be an Alabama though. Not in this modern era of college football.
