Great read. It was a different world back then.
To sum up, it appears that Wilkinson felt very threatened by what was happening on other campuses in the 60s (protests, rioting, students taking over campus buildings, etc) and fought hard to prevent BYU from becoming another Berkeley. I suppose he was successful in that regard. People took notice that BYU was different and many thought that was a positive thing.

Initially the methods of honor code enforcement were more lax, but they tightened up as it became obvious that many students would not comply without being compelled. Undortunately, some of the enforcement tactics were rather unsavory, especially by today's standards.

It is interesting that Wilkinson was simultaneously dealing with new enrollment caps - and this was the first time these standards were positioned as one more facet of competitiveness for admission into a limited pool. He sought to do away with the idea of BYU being a place to reform problem students, but advocated the idea that a competitive school should accept only those who were willing to be spiritually competitive, so to speak. I think this is actually the strongest argument for the Honor Code, even today. He argued that BYU students are representatives of the church, and as such, should represent the best the church has to offer.

I also find it interesting that the students and faculty were not on board with a lot of his ideas - and many of their arguments greatly resemble the daily debates of CB.

And finally, I'm sitting here thinking about how my parents were at BYU in the late 60s/early 70s and would have lived through all of this. It would be interesting to chat with them about what it was like in those days. Not sure if CB has anybody in that age group (my parents are in their early 70s), but I would be interested in hearing others' thoughts as well. Hard to know what to think since I didn't live through that era. Seems like there were a lot of anti-communism themes in this article, that must have played a pretty significant role in everyday life.
