O-line
We lose 3 starters (Koroma, Norman, Kanuch) but have 7 guys back from the 2017 2-deep (Shoaf, Hoyt, Longson, Empey, Chambers, Herring, Pulsipher) and add former US Army All-American and Notre Dame transfer Tristen Hoge. I expect Shoaf and Hoyt to start at the tackles again. Hoge will likely take Koroma's place at center. Empey, Longson, Chambers are all very talented young players who have gained experience and should be ready to take the next step. Other guys who could add depth such as Vaka, Sitake-Tanoa'i, Jimenez, Nwigwe. We should be able to field a talented, quality group in 2018.
RB
The way Squally finished the season (final 4 games: 115.3 yds/game on 7.1 ypc) I have to believe he will emerge as the feature back. I'm excited to see what Grimes experience as LSU's run game coordinator can do for Squally as a senior. Ula showed flashes in 2017. With a full off-season to really get in shape, he should be very good. Just shore up the ball security! Lots of talented depth with Hall, Burt, Kafentzis, Dye. I suspect Grimes will try to build his offensive identity around this position group, there's some real talent and depth there to work with.
WR
Here's where the question marks emerge. This group obviously struggled this year. Simon, Hifo, Pau'u... those 3 showed us some real flashes in 2017. I think those 3 can be pretty dang good next year. The rest of the group, we'll see... Shumway, Tanner, Davis... there's some potential there, but they need to step up. Could be a decent group imo with better coaching and scheme.
TE
We all know we have an emerging star in USA Today Freshman All-American Matt Bushman (set BYU freshman TE records with 49 catches, 520 yards). I am very excited to see Bushman paired with the return of Moroni Laulu-Pututau. Should be a great tandem. Twin TE formations with those two could be very dangerous.
QB
Hoge, Critchlow, Wilstead... should be an interesting QB battle. I like all 3 of these guys, they all have good tools and potential, but there's obviously question marks with all of them and the lack of experience. I don't expect Tanner Mangum will be ready by the season opener, that's a brutal injury to recover from. I honestly have no idea who will be the starter in the season opener at Arizona.
Overall I don't think the cupboard is bare for Grimes. There's some pieces to work with, especially in the run game. Finding a QB and improving the wideouts are obviously the biggest question marks. I am very anxious to see what kind of system he installs and what kind of progress the offense can make. Fingers crossed!
