the student section quietly read newspapers during announcement of the Utah lineup. With newspapers in front our faces, it was unusually quiet in the arena. No boos, no real acknowledgment of Utah except from a smattering of their fans... some of whom were visibly upset at those reading the papers for ignoring their team.
As the announcer turned his attention to the BYU lineup, everyone simultaneously stood, ripped up their newspapers and let loose. The sudden switch from the relative quiet of studied disregard to unmitigated cheering delayed introduction of BYU's starting lineup for several minutes until the public announcer could be finally be heard. I can see how that would be intimidating for a visiting team.
No need to single out Utah's coach. Boney Fuller has already more than covered that this week. Just remind both teams where they are playing.
