just because you misunderstand the intended meaning of a statistic doesn't make
it a bad statistic. You are correct that statistics need to be put in context and balanced with other relevant stats.

What you **DON'T** seem to understand is that you shouldn't simply throw out statistics because you don't like them. Winning 20 games every year is absolutely significant and meaningful. It's not the end-all-be-all, but no intelligent person ever argued that it was. Did you really think Greg and Mark were intending to say that BYU is as good as those other schools???? That would be super silly. So is ignoring the significance of winning 20 games every year.

It's definitely not the ONLY statistic, but it's one important one.
