It seems pretty clear that Pope came up with the 3 point "bombs away" strategy this year because there was no other viable strategy. This team has only one guy who can play down low (Fouss), and he lacks height. The team lacked athleticism too. Hats off to Duquesne for doing exactly the right thing to exploit our weaknesses.
The 2020 team was a much more balanced team than this one. No, that team was not as deep, but it had a balanced inside-out attack. Yoeli was far better than any big man we have, and he could even shoot the three a bit. TJ was a shot creator/passing combo in a way that our current guards are not. And finally, even as to what BYU specialized in this year (3 point shooting) the 2020 team was far, far better % wise. We could only dream of having someone shoot 47% from three for the year like Toolson did in 2020. That team also had Barcello, who was a better shooter than anyone on this year's team. The 2020 team also had three legit star players, while this year's team only arguably had one (Robinson). Star players are essential to go far in the tournament IMO. The future is still bright with the players we have coming in. I really, really hope that Baker and Adams will be healthy next year, and that Chandler can get back in shape quickly.
I would also like to tip my hat to Spencer Johnson. 16 rebounds is insane. We could only dream of Waterman or Khalifa being able to rebound like that guy. It is great that Waterman can shoot the three and Khalifa can pass, but a big man has got to be able to shoot down low and rebound well. Neither of them can do any of that.
