BR has so many great songs but for many years I have said this one is my favorite. Here is a story from the
band’s autobiography describing how the guitar solo came about:

The album [The Empire Strikes First] came together quickly, with one notable exception. Brett [Gurewitz] wasn’t happy with the guitar solo in “Los Angeles Is Burning.” He and Brian [Baker] both took a few shots at it, but to Brett’s mind it wasn’t quite there, so he called in reinforcements. “One of my great heroes,” Brett said, “is Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He’s truly one of the greatest rock and roll guitar players of all time.” Brett got to know Mike through friends in the industry, namely recording engineers and record producers who all spoke highly of him. Mike’s son was a big fan of Rancid and other Epitaph bands, and Brett recalled seeing him in the balcony at the Palladium. Brett called Mike and asked him if he would play on the record, and he agreed. “I honestly think the solo makes the song,” Brett said. Brett was such an admirer of Campbell’s guitar work that he put out an album by Campbell’s surf band, the Blue Stingrays. In fact, Brett created a new label to release it—Epitone.

Here’s my favorite song from the Blue Stingrays record:
