people rely on subjective things to determine guilt or innocence. In the Ohtani poll, 2/3rds of people think Ohtani is lying. Based on what? Likely they don't like the Dodgers, so therefore Ohtani must be lying. And those who think he's telling the truth? Many are likely Dodger fans and they think it's true because they want it to be true.
In the Detmer poll over 90% believe he's completely innocent of wrongdoing. Now, obviously we have the benefit of the court case - so we do have actual facts to go on in this case - but as a group of BYU fans, we're much more likely to believe Detmer didn't do anything shady compared to Ohtani.
I'm not speculating anything about Detmer. Just using a case that hits close-to-home as a counterpoint to the Ohtani case and the people who have either already made up their minds or are leaning towards guilt or innocence when we don't really know one way or the other at this point.
