They also pretty much sucked most of the time live (not Dave Grohl's fault) until they hired Pat Smear to help out. But that was partially due to poor musicianship and partially due to disdain for the audience. At the time, I don't remember a lot of people who were die hard Nirvana fans (usually more in to bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Jane's Addiction, etc), but after he died there were a lot of people who started claiming "I was die hard all along".
