Our town is having a problem with this, but we are fighting it because of some
Supreme Court cases that show the way our assessor has been operating is illegal. If your county has been severely under-assessed for a long time and now they are bringing them up to actual value, but not doing it in a principled way, it violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. Our problem is exacerbated by the fact that there are state law caps on how fast property taxes can increase by taxation district. So their unconstitutional approach isn't even changing how much the state/county gets, it is just shifting who is paying for it onto those that were first re-assessed at a 40-50% valuation jump.
