follow ups. A younger family member brought him in to his appt who I hadn't met yet. So me trying to acknowledge and be nice to family members ask if the patient was his Grandpa and how nice it was for him to bring him in. He laughs and says "no, he is my dad."

Foot in mouth. Never would have suspected. So I asked how old he was. He is 17 and the youngest of 10 children. The oldest sibling is 61. Wow. Being a dad to a newborn at 64, not in my plans.
