Finally finished "Barry" this weekend. (Spoilers)
I really think it is one of the best shows of the last 5 years. Personally I wouldn't put it on the Mad Men/The Wire/Breaking Bad level, but it is probably in the tier just below them for me. Very few shows have done dark comedy as well as this show, and I think NoHo Hank is one of the top 20 funniest secondary characters of all time.

All that said.........the final season was something of a let down. I get that it was always going to be really hard (okay, impossible) to have a happy ending for a show that was basically about a sympathetic serial killer. Barry kind of took the Breaking Bad premise of "lets take a really sympathetic character and see how long it takes the audience to turn on him" concept and turned it up to 11. Whereas Walter in Breaking Bad became more and more unlikeable as the series went along, Barry mostly retained this aura of naive affability even as the things he did became more and more indefensible. I was still making excuses for him right up until the end of the show. My issue with the final season is that in the last four episodes, where they "fast forward" into the future, they basically suck all of the fun out of the show. Even Hank has lost all of his charm (it's so grim that the one funny Hank moment of the last four episodes, when him and his henchman botch a missle launch against Fuch's army, feels out of place). I get that the point is showing all of these characters (Barry, Hank, Sally, and Gene) are now living with the consequences of the actions they took many years ago, but the magic of Barry had always been it's ability to inject comedy into terrible situations, and that just disappears in the last four episodes.

Overall, they did the best they could to come up with a "satisfying" ending. Barry ultimately pays for his sins, but ends up remembered for the good things he did rather than his mistakes. Sally and his son get the best possible "realistic" outcome you could hope for. Even Fuchs gets one chance to redeem himself at the end. I just wish it hadn't been so grim. I give the series a 9 out of 10, and now I'm depressed because I need to find another great show to watch.
