A bunch of grown men speaking in hushed tones about a few acres of manicured grass and trees. Heck, "hushed tones" is probably underselling it. They are positively reverent about it. They sell it as the greatest event in sports, but many in the golf community don't even think it's the greatest event in golf - giving the nod to the British Open, especially when played at St. Andrews.
They talk about the greats that have walked those hallowed fairways. I'd stack the players that have played at Wimbledon, Lambeau Field, Dodger Stadium, and any number of other places against the list players that have played at the Masters. Yes, the list of well-known golfers is impressive. But it's still golf, so don't try to tell me the Masters is somehow better than the Superbowl or World Series. I'm not a soccer fan, but there are probably plenty of soccer stadiums that have seen players play there that are more well-known on a world-wide level than the majority of golf legends.
I like watching the Masters, especially when someone I want to win is in the running. But let's have a little self-reflection on its place in the wide wide world of sports. It's on the list, almost certainly top 25, but don't try to tell me it's the greatest of all time.
Oh, and sorry if I whispered too loudly in this post.
