Let's take a look at the Final Four teams this past year.
Alabama: Loaded with smaller school guys who transferred and excelled
NC State: Top 7 scorers are transfers
Purdue: A team led by Seniors including the National Player of the Year in Edey
UCONN: Top 2 scorers and 3 out of top 6 scorers transfers, sprinkled in with high recruits.
More and more it isn't about the Calipari model of recruiting the NBA guys to come play for a year. It is about getting experienced players and if you time everything perfectly like UCONN did, adding top talent to play alongside those transfers.
So how is Kentucky in the portal and with NIL? The answer? Not very good, but with a ton of potential.
Kentucky can raise funds, but needs its donors to actually do it and the philosophy of the school and the basketball program to change. Fans of Kentucky love their last 15 years of having the best group of NBA players from one school. Can they change and adapt? Do you want to be the program that presides over that? Or do you believe they can win again with the old model? The #3, #5 and #6 rated recruits this last year did not contribute a ton. Who did? The transfer from Illinois St. It wasn't enough in the tournament, but Kentucky needs to change and adapt. Many are saying they are not interested in doing that.
