A good friend of mine at BYU was a great tennis player in HS. Recruited by many schools. She chose to go to Cal right out of HS.
She comes from a very devout LDS family in Utah. Dad was a mission president. Her parents had serious concerns about their 18 year old daughter going to a very liberal place like Cal on her own. After many talks, she convinced them that everything would be fine and that it wasn't that bad. She enrolls and prepares to move there.
Well, the day arrives and they drive her to campus. They pull into a parking lot on campus and get out to go to the registration building. As they get onto the sidewalk, the guy who had become famous in the media at the time and who everyone called "the naked man" in the news just happened to stroll by wearing nothing but boots and a bandana. That was their very first exposure (pun intended) to the student experience at Cal.
No surprise, she transferred to BYU after her freshman year.
