So my son is temporarily coming home from his mission for 12 weeks for minor knee surgery. I transferred his phone number to Google and cancelled his Verizon line.

We still have his old phone. Can I pay for a new line, transfer it back to Verizon for 12 weeks and then cancel it again?

Is there a better way to get him phone access while he is here?
