I had a new feeling today … you know, as a BYU fan. Part of fandom is a shared pride in and loyalty toward an institution or team. It’s increasingly clear to me—in today’s world of NIL and the portal—that few players share that feeling of pride and loyalty to BYU football and basketball. I seriously wonder if, in a couple of years, the gulf between player loyalty and my own will cause me to become more disengaged as a fan. Five years ago, I would have said that nothing could ever undermine my sense of fandom … yet here I am.
