The ability to MAKE ADJUSTMENTS in a game.
I really liked Coach Pope. But, there were things that frustrated me. One of those was the apparent stubbornness in the game-plan. It seemed that, no matter what, BYU ran the same plays play in and play out. BYU had a hard time adjusting during games. I don't know if this was stubbornness, personnel, or what. But, to me, it was clearly seen.
Another factor was player personnel. There were many times when I thought, "Why is that player in there at this particular time when there is no benefit?" "Why is Khalifa playing when he is clearly clearly injured and hampered." Were other players just that bad?
All in all, I understand the nature of game-planning ahead of facing your opponent. But, I also believe you have to be flexible and organic in some ways. Able to see what is happening, and adjust. Other teams do it all the time. I have a similar complaint against BYU Football. Very very slow to adjust.
All in all, I feel like BYU is going to take a bit of a step back and rebuild under the new coach this next year, so my expectations aren't going to be great. But, I hope it bodes well into the future.
We shall see.
