Saying goodbye to friends
Our family moved from TX to ID. Was this earthshaking news that mattered to the state of TX? Nope, But we still went out of our way to say goodbye to people that mattered to us. It didn't work out to meet up w every single one of my friends, but I made every effort to do so. Then I publicly expressed my thanks to all the people that had made a decade in TX such a magnificent part of my life. It meant so much to me to express that. I think I needed that because I was really sad to leave. I was also very thrilled to move to Idaho. Pope must not really be that sentimental about leaving BYU. Maybe he didn't really like it there. Who knows? Either way, it's not good PR for him and it sends a message that BYU and it's supporters were not his friends. A true friend says, "Thanks for the time we had together. I will miss you." When someone who you thought was your friend departs without saying a word, it leaves people scratching their heads. That's Pope. No, he didn't know us personally. But when you are a public figure you have to understand that the public see's you as a friend and looks up to you. It's an opportunity to be a leader. That's why most BYU fans are dissapointed. Maybe some are a little more hurt than others. (Those people are more worried about the future of the program than they are about Pope's well being.) BYU will continue on just fine. We will replace him. We will have more great players come. Life will continue on. Bonus: We will have actual NCAA tournement wins under a different coach. Maybe we will be leveling up sooner than we thought. Fingers crossed. Maybe we'll get a coach that is a great coach and a great friend to BYU as well. But here is an important life tip unrelated to basketball: say goodbye to your friends when you leave. Say "Thank you." Live in a way so that, you will miss people when you have to leave. It enriches your life.
