Pope has been a decent but not great D1 coach, but has shown flashes that suggest he could develop into something great. With that record, the best thing he has going for him is the fact that he's a Kentucky man all the way and his tie to the 1996 championship team. Playing into that is the best way to sell to the fanbase what is (to judge from message boards and twitter) an otherwise underwhelming coaching hire.
