I know a high school basketball coach in Utah who recently told me the following (paraphrased) before these coaching changes: "In the time I've spent with the coaches at the three biggest schools in Utah, including at clinics and the recruiting of my players, in my opinion Danny Sprinkle is the best. He's really good. Craig Smith is second, and Mark Pope is third." I asked why Pope third and he said, "I don't love Pope's style. As one example, he seems to have a long leash for the top players, i.e., not enough discipline."
I think Pope did a serviceable job and have nothing against him for going to his alma mater, but I've never thought he was an amazing coach. The next coach might do better, might not, but I don't think losing him will be a huge loss in the long run.
