Basketball players for next year - sky is not falling
Yes, we have uncertainty at the head coach position level - but, realistically, it was just on Friday that the news of Mark Pope headed to Kentucky really broke. Pieces are moving. BYU will likely announce a new head coach within 48 hours from this morning - I think by Thursday night. So, that would be a new head coach named within less than a week, and that's lightning speed for BYU.

However, I don't think the sky is falling for BYU basketball roster next season, even with the Collin Chandler de-commit from BYU. Remember that Chandler has not played a minute of college basketball, and he hasn't played for a couple years. It is, BY FAR, the exception rather than the rule that a player comes off a mission and contributes heavily in a freshman season. I recognize we have some guys "in the portal," but really - things aren't all wrapped up at this point.

BYU is definitely down a couple players for next year.

* Spencer Johnson - graduated out. Very solid, glue player.
* Tanner Hayhurst - "in the portal." Walk-on, nice guy, scout team.
* Marcus Adams - "in the portal." Leaves with good feelings about the Y, had tough injuries and also family tragedy this past season. Wish him nothing but the best. But, we can't miss him because we never had more than 5 minutes in one game to see him out on the court.

That's it. Collin Chandler - never played at BYU. Great player, but there are a lot of great players. Current guys "in the portal" -

* Dallin Hall - has already listed a "return to BYU" as an option. Proven contributor. We all know the first job of the new coaching staff will be to prioritize and re-recruit existing players. Not gone yet.
* Richie Saunders - seems to love BYU. Proven contributor. Not gone yet, could certainly come back.
* Aly Khalifa - seems to love BYU. Already listed "return to BYU" as one of three options. Solid contributor, even with injuries. Not gone yet.

Now, guys that COULD come to BYU are still all over the place out there or are already here.

* Dawson Baker - already here. Getting healthy. Proven 15 ppg guy at the college level. Did he ever have the Chandler hype? Of course not. But, he's a proven kid and already in the program - just needs a head coach and a healthy body.
* Isaac Davis - already coming. Loves BYU. Great passing big man, athletic, could give us a pretty solid contribution as a freshman.
* Brody Kozlowski - back "in the portal" since the USC coach moved. Could we get him? Great shooter, rebounder. We have a shot.
* Jace Whiting - Mom already coaches BYU women, great basketball family, LDS kid. "In the portal." A solid guard that could contribute.
* Race Young - go down the rabbit hole - off a mission and available. Kid just has all the earmarks of a great college basketball player. Get him.
* Tanner Toolson - solid contributor for UVU this year - not saying he's available, but could potentially come back if he ever enters the portal. More minutes available now.

Actually, that's just a tiny list - if you start looking around, there are solid college players or college incoming players with LDS or BYU ties all over the place. Seriously, there are. A lot who could play at BYU and contribute. More than we would need for a team. Mason Falslev. Keanu Dawes. Keeyan Itejere. More. I don't think the sky is falling. I think the landscape is just changing, and we'll have some guys stick around and want to be at BYU and some will not, and some new guys will come in. You want size? Incoming. Adam Stewart. Give him a couple years - great kid, BYU kid. I am not anxious. I am excited. BYU will get guys and put a team on the floor - and we may just be surprised. More fun to think about than "the sky is falling."
