We all knew who Pope was early on–just didn't expect him to get the opportunity
so soon. I just wish that he had left an assistant behind that could continue what he had started. I wish that him leaving didn't disrupt the direction of the team so greatly. Losing the coach, the highest recruit in BYU history and possibly 4 starters is not fun.

I made the 20/20 case that Madsen was a better choice – because it appears like he wants to build something, not just use the situation to leapfrog to a better situation. LaVell had plenty of opportunities to leave BYU for better jobs, but he built BYU into a program that won top awards–including a NC. Coach K did this at Duke. He made them what they are. Wooden did the same at UCLA. Some people are builder and other are placeholders (and you do need talent to be a placeholder at Kentucky and other programs).

Ultimately, BYU will survive and maybe even thrive next season. Life is good. Party on.
