I think we are witnessing a shift in focus at BYU from football to basketball.
There are so many reasons why this just makes more sense with the current state of the college football landscape. We are never going to be able to compete at the highest level in football but we can in basketball. Gonzaga has shown us firsthand how it is done. And now BYU finds itself in the premier basketball league with half of its members playing in the Big Dance every year, while the college football playoffs are becoming monopolized by the Big 10 and SEC.

Plus, it just makes sense for BYU to focus more on basketball from a recruiting standpoint. BYU is owned and operated by an increasingly international church and there are 1000 times more opportunities to recruit basketball players than football players outside the US.

And today we see BYU make an absolutely unprecedented move to hire an NBA caliber coach by throwing a huge bag of money at him, and then still go out and try to surround him with top assistants that won’t be cheap either. The shift is happening right before our eyes.
