There seem to be a few distinct important skills/talents successful College BB coaches have/need.

In no order of importance:

1- Xs & Os: by all reports, KY is elite in this aspect on the offensive side. Probably will need some defensive specialists on his staff

2- player development: again, he has rave reviews at the NBA level here. Gotta think this will help him with recruiting pitches, but even more important is getting the most out of the talent/players he has

3- recruiting: this is definitely an “unknown” for someone like KY who has been in the proBB ranks nearly his entire career. One would hope he can capitalize on the buzz/momentum of the hiring splash and his reputation on #1 & #2 above. Will need some bang up recruiters early on and NIL support to capitalize here and get the ball of success rolling.

4- program management/HC duties. This is VERY important at BYU, that he represents the school/church well, and that he can handle the media attention/coach’s show slog. He’s largely been protected from this as an assistant coach…

5- game management. Game Pacing & personnel, and when to call timeouts or pull players for rest or foul trouble usually falls to the HC. While I’m not overly concerned here as he’s been involved in this at the highest level, he hasn’t been the HC and had the buck stop with him and his decisions.

6- building a good team culture and developing good relationships with players: seems to be a very likable guy and has lots of rave reviews from his former player/colleagues. I’m guessing this will be a strength of his
