Division Bell Recovering
One aspect that I really like about the recent coaching change is
That it feels like BYU's approach to sports has been modernized. We've always had serviceable facilities and programs. We had tremendous success because of individual coaches in both FB and BB, who developed fantastic staff, who in turn identified and developed great players.

Just look at LaVell's impact on the style of play in CFB and the coaching tree which branched out to the upper echelons of the NFL. It's amazing.

Look at the long term impact of players like Danny Ainge, Fred Roberts et al..

But BYU was fortunate to find those coaches and players on the cheap. We were lulled into thinking that such tactics would always work. They don't, just as spending lots of money doesn't always work. Sports success is a fickle mistress that demands constant attention and a willingness to adapt the approach as circumstances change.

Until Crowton came around, our ability to analyze game film was limited. He brought in more modern video equipment and programs to help coaches analyze movement, trends, and patterns.

BYUtv's move to mobile HD broadcast was genius. As a fan, I loved hearing ESPN talent gushing about how BYU's mobile trucks had nicer equipment than their home office / studio.

Despite these advances, it always seemed like BYU's approach to hiring coaches was stuck in the 1970s. We were constantly looking for the next LaVell for a bargain price.

Until yesterday.

To me, this signaled a shift in our thinking. At least, I hope it's the case. My first love is still BYU FB, but I'm more excited about BB. I have high expectations for the team moving forward. The same cannot be said about FB, which seems hopelessly mired in the approach of the 1970s. I'm hoping that this newfound approach will continue to inject life into all programs. Heaven knows the FB program could use it.
